Knowledge: Acquaintance, familiarity, perception, awareness

D&C 46:18
To another is given the word of knowledge, that all may be taught to be wise and to have knowledge.

Aren't grandfathers supposed to know everything? I certainly felt that mine did!

Maybe he didn't start out that way, but he spent his life learning all he could about just about everything. It seemed he was always tinkering with something. I never remember him sitting still; I guess he learned by doing.

1974 at a Merrie Miss father/daughter activity. My dad went with my younger sister, so I got to go with my grandfather. What a great memory!

As a young man he left home to "seek his fortune" (as my mom put it) in Southern California. He first had a job working in a cannery, then he sold magazines, and finally got a job in a repair shop. He spent some time in the Marine Corps and sang in a choir.

Later, I remember him working for IBM and building an addition to their house in his spare time. He worked with his hands, but he also did a lot of reading and learning through interacting with others. Look at the titles of some of his books, along with his special workshop tips:

Thanks to Aunt Cheri!

We know our Savior knows absolutely everything. We also know the knowledge we gain in this life is one of the few things that we can take with us when we die. I'm grateful for my grandfather's example in this area, of using his time here on this earth wisely and continuing to learn new things each day.
