Attribute #4 - Submissiveness

Submissiveness: Humble obedience; yielding to authority

Alma 7:23
And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.

George Whitaker, Wayne's great-great-great grandfather was born in England in 1820. When he was 21 years old, he walked 14 miles to hear Parley P. Pratt speak, and was then baptized that evening, by Thomas Tysom. A couple of years later the Spirit told him he should emigrate to Nauvoo, so he did. He records the following experience in his biography:

[After arriving in New Orleans], President Fielding chartered a boat to take us to St. Louis, and in a little less than two weeks we arrived there. I found some few friends that I had known in the old country. They seemed to be doing very well and wanted me to stay. I told them I did not come with the intention of staying at St. Louis, Nauvoo being my destination, and that I was going there by the help of God. They told me I could make a better living there than at Nauvoo, as it was a very poor place to make money. I told them I did not leave my home and friends with the expectation of making money, but that I had come for the purpose of gathering with the Saints, and was willing to share with them in their poverty.

This story is just one of the reasons that I chose submissiveness for his attribute. George was humbly obedient, willing to do whatever his leaders and God asked him to do. I admire his example; his example reminds me of our Savior.

Matthew 26:39
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
