The Armor of God - Updated
Why do you think this post – “Armor of God” – is my most frequently viewed one? I’m not sure, but I figured after ten years it was due for an update. So, here you go!
That post shared quotes from a talk given long ago by President Harold B. Lee. The counsel, however, is timeless.
- Knowledge of truth helps protect our virtue.
- Righteousness protects our heart, helping us find daily peace.
- Preparation, resulting in courage, helps us be victorious in life.
- Knowledge of the plan of salvation helps protect our thoughts and decisions.
These are great principles. In addition to embracing them as adults, we also desire to teach them to our children. We want them to have the protection that comes from putting on “the whole armor of God.” Here are just a few of the many resources available to help us do just that. Which would work for your family?
Make your own armor – using paper plates and/or cardboard

I even found three different songs on this subject that could be used to help teach our children and build in them the desire to put on the armor of God. You can find them here and here and here.
I can imagine our teenagers having fun dressing up in play armor and fighting with play swords. However, if you don’t think yours would, here’s an object lesson using apples and lemons to help teach the principle of protection.
Finally, here’s a website called “Creative Ways to Teach Your Children about the Armor of God.” He has some great, practical suggestions. I particularly liked the idea of having your children run a race wearing pants that are too big, once with a belt and once without, to show the importance of the “girdle of truth” in our lives.
However you do it, have fun teaching, through precept and example, the importance of knowledge, virtue, truth, courage, preparation, and righteousness.
The Whole Armor of God
The “helmet of salvation” guards our reasoning, intellect, and thoughts.
The “breastplate of righteousness” helps us to have the Spirit with us always, guarding our heart and soul.
Having our “loins girt about with truth” gives us the foundation to build faith and develop our testimony.
The “sword of the Spirit” is the word of God to pierce the darkness so that we may have light and truth to guide our way in life.
The “shield of faith” helps us withstand the fiery darts of the adversary.
Having our “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” by reading and studying the scriptures helps us be obedient to the laws, ordinances, commandments, and covenants of God.
