Two More Stories for a Baptism

Our granddaughter asked Grandpa to speak on the Holy Ghost at her baptism. He shared stories he's shared before, but (except for her dad) I'm sure no one else attending had heard them.

One of the challenges we have once we've been confirmed is learning how the Holy Ghost speaks to us; it's different for each person. However, the more we try, the better we get. Grandpa shared two examples of when he felt the Holy Ghost directing him.

The first was when he was in high school, taking a Spanish class in which he wasn't doing very well. He had a Spanish test the day after a youth activity at the church and was trying to decide if it would be better to stay home to study or support his leaders and attend the activity (which would have been much more enjoyable anyway). He chose to attend the activity, and during his evening prayer he reminded Heavenly Father that he had gone to church and to help him remember what he had learned in class. Taking the exam felt like any other test to him, yet when the results came in, he received an "A" - the first and only one in that Spanish class!

The second took place on his mission. He likes to share that God has a perfect sense of humor, and knowing that Spanish was a challenge for him, Heavenly Father assigned him to serve in Chile. In the MTC (missionary training center) they reviewed all his high school Spanish in one afternoon, but after a couple of months he felt pretty confident in his ability to actually speak the language. Once arriving in Chile, he was excited to share the gospel in Spanish. The first person he spoke to replied to his question and he couldn't understand a word. He thought he had been taught the wrong language! He was depressed and discouraged about ever being able to learn Spanish. Shortly afterwards, he walked by someone teaching their dog tricks and the Holy Ghost whispered to him that if a dog could learn Spanish, so could he. And he did!
